The Cat and the Rat

Guest Writing for Hope tonight: Wesley J. Boyd

Of all the great and wonderful things we experienced in Dublin during our recent vacation there is one in particular that really stands out.  It is a display case that contains the mummified remains of a cat and rat that is found in the crypt of Christ Church located in the center of the city.  The theory is that during a renovation of the churches pipe organ the craftsman found the remains in one of the many pipe systems.  The story goes that the cat became trapped after chasing the rat into the organ some time in the mid 1800’s.  This story has even been captured by one of the greatest writers of the 20th century, James Joyce in his book “Finnegans Wake.”  Joyce described someone as being “…As stuck as that cat to that mouse in that tube of that Christ Church organ…” The cat is chasing the rat perpetuity behind the glass in the case.

Known locally as “Tom and Jerry” after the popular American cartoon of the same name.
